Jacksonville Parkers Owed a Refund?

Metro Jacksonville has discovered that Central Parking System, Inc. has been found guilty of deceptive practices in New York state for the very same fake parking ticket scam that they are currently perpetrating on Downtown Jacksonville parkers.

Sooooo.... I can ignore the "ticket" I got last week? Mine wasn't a case of parking at night without paying as some others have had - it was during the day and I *may* have put the money in the wrong slot but I doubt it. I'm just worried about coming out of work and finding that my car has been towed or booted.

You can ignore the "ticket" however continuing to park on their lot may be a problem. They could decide to tow.

This may be a dumb question, but why would they go to the trouble of the fake tickets and then sending them on to a debt collector when they could just tow cars parked there without paying? Is there a cost to the lot owner to contract with a towing company? I figured the towing company just made its money from the ridiculous fees it charges you to get your car out of their tow lot.

The lot owners main recourse to someone who didn't pay to park should be to tow.  However, in the case of Central Parking Solutions, I think they feel like that would cut into their revenue too much.  They'd rather issue an illegal and unenforceable fine.

I think that they missed the point.

The problem is that it is a proven scam that is allowed to continue, not that they don't answer their phones.

Quoteindicating that city code requires a parking lot have an attendant on duty to safeguard cars if it expects the public to pay a fee for parking.

Any idea if Jax has a similar stipulation? And if so, how much of an impact does this have beyond the permanent surface lots to, say, gameday lawn lots?

I am more than furious right now.  I am steaming mad!!!!

I just got home to find a notice from an attorney in Colorado stating that I somehow owe Central Parking $47!

I have actually paid to park in their lot on Forsyth and Ocean and have paid the $3 weekend fee on more than one occasion.

I have never so much as even seen a fake ticket on car and now I come home to find a notice for $47 sitting in my mailbox.

I find this beyond ridiculous.  Anyone have the same problem?  How did you deal with it?

I want to report this to the City and want this coerced robbery stopped immediately...or he City should seize their lot back to imminent domain.  Charging for your lot is one thing, surprising parkers with $50 fees is completely beyond legitimate.

This is the kind of thing that makes me just want to skip downtown and go somewhere else.  I have never received a $47 invoice for parking at SJTC!!!!!!

Write them back asking for proof of the debt as outlined by the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act (agreement that bears your signature agreeing to pay creditor, any judgement that have been obtained by the creditor, an itemized breakdown of the debt, etc.).

They will mail you a copy of the "ticket" (and some other junk listing the owner of the vehicle) which doesn't fulfill any of those requirements.

Then write back thanking them for their response but it failed to validate the debt. Any further collection attempts will be reported as a violation of the FDCPA to the FTC as well as the State Bar.

Awesome Advice Lunican.  Thank you so much!

I will contact their attorney first thing tomorrow morning to begin the validation of my non-existent debt.
