Title: let's MAKE IT HAPPEN! in Historic Springfield
Post by: iloveionia on November 03, 2010, 08:23:51 PM
It's that time again!
Preservation SOS.  Save Our Springfield.
A project to support our mission of preservation.

Join us at 8 a.m. on November 20, 2010 at 343 E. 9th Street to add trim paint and exterior landscaping to our neighbor Kenneth's home.
Kenneth has lived here for more than 31 years. Another true Springfield trooper and friend in need.

A specific list of needs will be posted in the upcoming days.  But you can count on ladders, paint supplies, and landscape materials.

Kenneth is a DIY, kind of guy.  When I pulled up, he was attempting to make his own siding out of pallets.  He is on disability but does whatever he can to fix up his place for himself and his family.

Preservation SOS is helping him get materials, meeting with code enforcement on his behalf, and we will be filing a COA to bring his house into historic compliance.

The focus of our Make It Happen! will be to give his home some curb appeal and some love.

Kenneth's house was nominated for this project by his neighbors.  He gives what he can, now it is his turn to receive.

Thanks Chicken!

A needs/wish list is forthcoming for Kenneth's house, but most certainly all of the volunteers would greatly appreciate cases of water, snacks, and lunch.  Something as simple as PB and J would work.  Roll your grill over and barbeque some hot dogs?

Last time lots of folks brought coolers with water and drinks, Sharon made chicken curry wraps, Kim bought pizza, Marc brought breakfast sandwiches on Sunday.  Much needed and appreciated.  Interested?  Feed and hydrate us up.

Post here or drop an email to preservationsos@yahoo.com

Thanks in advance.

If you are a carpenter and plan on helping, bring your tools!  Adequately marked, of course.  This job has a lot of porch work to be done.

If you would like to help and want your own little project, you could build the dog a warm dog house for this winter.

Did Heights Unknown just volunteer to bring beans to Make It Happen?  Cool ones at that!  :)

She Clown, if you call a tree service, you can get mulch.  And I think Tree Hill in Arlington has free mulch.  It's hard to get a tree service to dump mulch here...Ray tried for a long time to get it for the community garden.  But, if you have a truck, and call a few, you can maybe get some.

Preservation SOS is not only interested in saving homes from bulldozers -- the back end of the condemned properties saga, but also in preventing the beginning of the process as well.

Both Miss Maggie and Kenneth lived in Springfield before it was a historic district.  Both raised families here.  And, unfortunately, both houses, like many more in the neighborhood, started on the Journey to Special Masters, rolling fines, punitive liens.

If we lose these people, long time residents with special challenges, chances are we will also lose these houses.  And if we lose these houses, we will lose many wonderful characters like Miss Maggie and Kenneth -- the special charm of Springfield.

That's not mulch -its manure on the Sustainable Springfield lot where there will be an orchard.  It will be spread over the lot this weekend and tilled into the soil.

So we are less than a week away!  Who is coming over to E. 9th to help?  Can't help?  What can you donate?  Refer to the list and bring it on!  We can also offer a receipt for your donation as we are umbrelling under our friends from Sustainable Springfield.  Whoot!  Whoot!

Come on folks, let's Make it Happen!!!!!

Good crowd at Kenneth's house this morning.  If you happen to have some time on your hands, why not wander over to East 9th and Walnut and say "hi" and cheer on the good efforts!

We had approximately 30 - 35 volunteers from in and outside of Historic Springfield. Neighbors and friends. Our goal: to save a house. Preservation. The result: speechless and grateful homeowners. We are doing what we are supposed to in life: helping others.

Lenora, Kenneth's wife, has lived on this block all her life. 41 years. She's going to look for some photos for us. Her mom lives around the corner. Kenneth, 31 years in Springfield. This house was his grandmother's who gave it to him.

A great day for Springfield.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered time and materials to "Make it Happen." I am proud to be one of "those people."

We are focusing on long time residents of Springfield, with limited means,  who are dealing with issues that put their homes at risk.
