Title: Why does Jacksonville deserve the St Johns River more than Orlando?
Post by: cityimrov on October 31, 2010, 09:21:56 PM
Somebody here give me a good reason as to why Jacksonville FL deserves the use of the St Johns River more than the fast growing more vital city of Orlando FL?  If I'm a member of the state government, which city should I grant greater water rights to, why?

Probably because they need to learn how to conserve more and stop waste before looking for a new source. The whole state should go to desalination IMO, but that is just me.

How is Orlando more vital, if I may ask.

Orlando is only vital to Ratville! 2020 or so, Union County could be going dry, thanks to Orlando sucking up as much water as they do! I don't think they have a right to create problems in Northeast Florida because of their wanton use! There is a thread on MJ concerning St Johns River Keepers and that issue!

We do not deserve it more and we do not use it for our public water like they want to.  The river should not be taxed more by north or central Florida.

There must be some reason all those people are moving there, right?  Plus they are also getting a neat high speed train, commuter rail, and have a pretty neat airport which has flights that go everywhere!  They also seem to have a bunch of military research faculties, a mid size research university (largest if you look at population), a little place called Disney World with all it's follower theme parks.

SUPERFICIALLY, it seems like Orlando is more important to the state economy than Jacksonville is.  Lots of it is glitz and glamor but to a politician, glitz and glamor is everything.  From the looks of it, Jacksonville is declining while Orlando is growing.  From the 1980s onward, Orlando is growing while Jacksonville is well, Jacksonville.* If Jacksonville is so great, why don't they have a high speed train?  Why is their downtown in such bad shape?  Orlando, now that's a place wanting to be the city of the 21st century!

It seems like a no brainier to let them have more water rights since they need it more?  They aren't asking for all the water, they just need a little bit of it!

*I'm using my rosy colored glasses that the rest of the state's general population sees us as.  A city which is just a speed bump to get to other destinations.
